Residential Vapor Intrusion Mitigation — Mystery Solved

Residential Vapor Intrusion Mitigation — Mystery Solved

Client: Industrial/commercial facility

A sub-slab depressurization (SSD) system operated at an industrial site where indoor concentrations still exhibited periodic TCE risk exceedances using current assessment methods. VaporSafe® continuous monitoring was deployed to investigate the issue.

Monitoring revealed that concentrations varied widely throughout the day. When project personnel turned off the SSD system weeks into the campaign to study potential impacts, an unexpected finding emerged: SSD operation increased vapor intrusion risks.

Key Lesson

SSD can actually increase risk if not properly designed, if preferential pathways are not accounted for, and if appropriate chemistry testing is not performed during implementation.
